RISK OF EXPOSURE TO BLOODBORNE PATHOGENS – HIGH

Position responsibilities
1. Follows the plan of care to help the consumer to maintain good personal hygiene and maintain a healthful, safe environment, is to perform ONLY those functions specified for each individual consumer
2. Receives written instructions from the Director.
3.Has knowledge of Agency policies and procedures. This applies to contracted employees also.
4. Is trained in first aid.
5. Is oriented and trained in all aspects of care to be provided to consumers.
6. If able to demonstrate competency in all areas of training for personal care.
7. Homemaker/Companion may assist consumers with the following activities.
  • Self-administration of medications by reminding the consumer to take medications and opening containers for the consumer.
  • Housekeeping
  • Personal grooming and dressing
  • Eating and meal preparation
  • Oral hygiene and denture care
  • Toileting and toilet hygiene
  • Arranging for medical and dental care including transportation to and from the appointment
  • taking and recording oral temperatures
  • Administering emergency first aid
  • Providing or arranging for social interaction
  • Providing transportation
8. Documents observations and services in the individual consumer record.
9. Reports any change in the consumer’s mental or physical condition or in the home situation to the Director.
Job conditions
1. The ability to drive and the ability to access consumers’ homes which may not be routinely wheelchair accessible are required.
2. Hearing, eyesight, and physical dexterity must be sufficient to perform a physical assessment of the consumer’s condition and to perform consumer care/services.
3.On occasion, may be required to bend, stoop, reach and move, lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds.
4. Must be able to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
Company information
  • Has access to all consumer medical records.
Qualifications
1. Completion of at least the ninth grade. Preferably a high school diploma or equivalent.
2. Must have completed a minimum of 40 hours of training which includes an introduction to personal care services.
3. Must be free from health problems that may be injurious to consumer, self and co-workers and must present appropriate evidence to substantiate this with a physical examination that must have been completed within 12 months prior to employment/referral.
4. Must comprehend the basics of personal care, housekeeping, and meal preparation.
5. Must understand and respect consumer’s including ethics and confidentiality of care.
6. Must be able to understand, read and write English.
